Ruling on COOL Expected this Summer

The World Trade Organization Appellate Body should have an answer regarding U.S. Country of Origin Labeling as it applies to imported livestock – specifically Canadian hogs and beef cattle – this summer. The hearing on the U.S. appeal is complete. An Alberta pork producer believes the Government of Canada team effectively argued that the law is a protectionist measure. Andrew Dickson – Manitoba Pork Council General Manager – says it was also effectively argued that COOL labeling requirements have seriously harmed and continue to harm Canadian exports of cattle and hogs to the U.S. The Appellate Body must now consider the record evidence and arguments – with its conclusion expected toward the end of June.
