DAILY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS FOR SOUTHERN FARM NETWORK
The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for September 24, 2019 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. All livestock is state reported.
Cattle: At the livestock auctions held Monday in Canton, Siler City, and Turnersburg a total of 1,836 cattle, 56 goats, and 36 sheep were sold. Compared to last week, slaughter cows were mostly steady to 1.00 higher, while bulls were mostly steady to 1.00 lower. Feeder steers were mostly steady to 2.00 lower; bulls mostly steady to 4.00 lower; while heifers were mostly 1.00 to 5.00 higher. Demand was light to moderate; market activity and buyer interest were slow to moderate. Offerings of cattle were moderate to heavy. Cattle quality was plain to average. Average dressing slaughter cows brought $48-$60, with high dressing up to $74. Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, sold from $65-$88. 400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers ranged $118-$145, 500-600 lbs. were $110-$137. M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. were $108-$144, 500-600 lbs. ranged $104-$136. M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. were $118-$143, 500-600 lbs. ranged $107-$125.
Broiler-Fryers: The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady, and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand. Average weights were mostly desirable. The estimated slaughter for Tuesday in North Carolina was 3,587,000 head compared to 3,454,000 head last Tuesday.
Eggs: The market was lower on extra large and large, steady on the balance. Supplies of medium were heavy, extra large fairly light, and large mostly moderate. Retail demand was mostly moderate. Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets, cents per dozen: Extra Large 93.45, Large 90.21, Medium 68.00, and Small 46.00.
Cotton: The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 61.40 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 57.83 cents per pound.
Grain: U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was 1 cent higher when compared to last report. Prices ranged $3.99-$4.84 at feed mills and $3.95-$4.44 at elevators; new crop $3.84. U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were 1 to 2 cents higher. Prices were $9.19 at the processors and ranged $8.44-$8.64 at the elevators; new crop $8.28-$8.69. U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat had no price comparison; prices were $4.25-$4.36 at the elevators. Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $334.50 per ton for 48% protein.
