DAILY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS FOR SOUTHERN FARM NETWORK

 

The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for October 07, 2019 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  All livestock is state reported.

 

Cattle:  At the livestock auction held Friday in Siler City a total of 943 cattle, 62 goats, and 52 sheep were sold.  Compared to last week, slaughter cows were mostly steady to 1.00 higher and bulls 4.00 to 5.00 lower on a fairly light test.  Feeder steers were mostly steady to 2.00 lower; bulls mostly steady to 3.00 lower; while heifers were mostly 1.00 to 2.00 higher.  Demand, market activity, and buyer interest were moderate.  Offerings of cattle were moderate.  Cattle quality was average.  Average dressing slaughter cows brought $50-$59, with high dressing up to $64.  Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, sold from $74-$84.  400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers ranged $120-$142, 500-600 lbs. were $118-$134.  M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. ranged $116-$127, 500-600 lbs. were $106-$121.  M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. were $116-$128, 500-600 lbs. ranged $110-$128.

 

Goats:  At the goat auction in Shelby on Friday, October 04, a total of 163 goats and 52 sheep were sold.  All prices are quoted per head.  Slaughter and Replacement Classes, Selection 1 and 2 – Kids: 20-80 lbs. $35-$175; Does/Nannies: 50-100 lbs. $50-$145, 100-140 lbs. $70-$205; Bucks/Billies: 70-100 lbs. $90-$135, 100-150 lbs. $85-$175, 150-250 lbs. $190.  Slaughter Lambs: Good 20-60 lbs. $35-$80, 60-100 lbs. $90; Choice and Prime 20-60 lbs. $92.50, 60-100 lbs. $65-$127.  Ewes: Good 100-200 lbs. $65-$80.

 

Broiler-Fryers:  The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand.  Average weights were mostly desirable.  The estimated slaughter for Monday in North Carolina was 3,554,000 head compared to 3,456,000 head last Monday.

 

Eggs:  The market was steady on all sizes.  Supplies of medium were heavy, others moderate.  Retail demand was moderate.  Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets, cents per dozen: Extra Large 90.35, Large 87.11, Medium 68.00, and Small 46.00.

 

Cotton:  The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 62.33 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 58.97 cents per pound.

 

Grain:  U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was 3 cents higher when compared to last report.  Prices ranged $4.17-$4.97 at feed mills and $4.02-$4.52 at elevators; new crop $3.97.  U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were 1 to 2 cents lower.  Prices were $9.30 at the processors and ranged $8.65-$8.90 at the elevators; new crop $8.50-$8.90.  U.S. 2 soft red winter had no price comparison; prices were $4.36-$4.44 at the elevators; new crop $4.86-$5.02.  Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $337.10 per ton for 48% protein.
