DAILY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS FOR SOUTHERN FARM NETWORK

The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for September 25, 2019 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  All livestock is state reported.

Cattle:  At the livestock auction held Tuesday in Shelby a total of 655 cattle were sold.  Compared to last week, slaughter cows were steady to 2.00 lower, while bulls were 1.00 to 2.00 higher on a very light test.  Feeder steers were mostly 3.00 to 4.00 higher on a light test; while heifers were 3.00 to 4.00 lower on a very light test; and bulls mixed, 5.00 lower to 2.00 higher, also on a very light test.  Demand was moderate; market activity and buyer interest were active.  Offerings of cattle were mostly moderate.  Cattle quality was plain to average.  Average dressing slaughter cows brought $50-$62, with high dressing up to $65.  Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, sold from $79-$87, high dressing ranged $91-$97.  400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers ranged $125-$134.50, 500-600 lbs. were $125-$130.  M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. were $118-$125, 500-600 lbs. ranged $95-$110.  M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. ranged $123-$131, 500-600 lbs. were $121.

Broiler-Fryers:  The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand.  Average weights were mostly desirable.  The estimated slaughter for Wednesday in North Carolina was 3,574,000 head compared to 3,560,000 head last Wednesday.

Eggs:  The market was steady on all sizes.  Supplies of medium were heavy, extra large fairly light, and large mostly moderate.  Retail demand was mostly moderate.  Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets, cents per dozen: Extra Large 93.45, Large 90.21, Medium 68.00, and Small 46.00.

Cotton:  The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 61.45 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 57.88 cents per pound.

Grain:  U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was steady when compared to last report.  Prices ranged $3.99-$4.84 at feed mills and $3.94-$4.44 at elevators; new crop $3.84.  U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were 5 cents lower.  Prices were $9.14 at the processors and ranged $8.39-$8.59 at the elevators; new crop $8.22-$8.64.  U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat had no price comparison; prices were $4.32-$4.35 at the elevators.  Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $332.60 per ton for 48% protein.
