DAILY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS FOR SOUTHERN FARM NETWORK

 

The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for September 18, 2019 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  All livestock is state reported.

 

Cattle:  At the livestock auction held Tuesday in Shelby a total of 546 cattle were sold.  Compared to last week, slaughter cows were 1.00 to 2.00 lower, while bulls were 7.00 to 9.00 lower on a fairly light test.  Feeder steers were 3.00 to 10.00 higher on a light test; while bulls and heifers had too few comparable head to establish a market comparison.  Demand was light; market activity and buyer interest were slow.  Offerings of cattle were moderate.  Cattle quality was plain to average.  Average dressing slaughter cows brought $53-$62, with high dressing up to $70.  Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, sold from $75-$86.  400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers ranged $128-$129.  M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. were $123.  M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. were $127-$133.

 

Broiler-Fryers:  The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand.  Average weights were mostly desirable.  The estimated slaughter for Wednesday in North Carolina was 3,547,000 head compared to 3,405,000 head last Wednesday.

 

Eggs:  The market was lower on extra large and large, steady on the balance.  Supplies were moderate, overall.  Retail demand was fairly light to moderate.  Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets, cents per dozen: Extra Large 116.16, Large 107.89, Medium 68.00, and Small 46.00.

 

Cotton:  The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 61.50 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 57.93 cents per pound.

 

Grain:  U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was 3 cents higher when compared to last report.  Prices ranged $3.96-$4.81 at feed mills and $3.91-$4.41 at elevators; new crop $3.81.  U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were 5 cents lower.  Prices were $9.14 at the processors and ranged $8.39-$8.59 at the elevators; new crop $8.24-$8.64.  U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat had no price comparison; prices were $4.31-$4.44 at the elevators.  Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $326.60 per ton for 48% protein.
