DAILY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS FOR SOUTHERN FARM NETWORK
The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for September 20, 2019 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. All livestock is state reported.
Cattle: At the livestock auction held Thursday in Smithfield a total of 625 cattle were sold. Compared to last week, slaughter cows were mostly steady to 1.00 higher; while bulls were 6.00 to 7.00 lower on a very light test. Feeder steers were mostly steady to 3.00 lower; heifers mostly 3.00 to 6.00 lower; and bulls were unevenly steady. Demand, market activity, and buyer interest were moderate. Offerings of cattle were fairly heavy. Cattle quality was average. Average dressing slaughter cows brought $54-$64, with high dressing up to $69. Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, sold from $74-$84. 400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers ranged $120-$137, 500-600 lbs. were $124-$133. M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. were $105-$118, 500-600 lbs. ranged $94-$115. M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. were $123-$129, 500-600 lbs. ranged $100-$125.
State Graded Cattle Sale: At the state graded feeder cattle sale in Norwood, 592 steers and 508 heifers were sold. M&L 1 steers, 400-500 lbs., averaged $139.85 per cwt.; 500-600 lbs. were $137.50; 600-700 lbs. returned $128.22. M&L 1 heifers, 400-500 lbs., received $121.77; 500-600 lbs. were $107.62; and 600-700 lbs. brought $113.15.
Broiler-Fryers: The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand. Average weights were mostly desirable. The estimated slaughter for Friday and Saturday in North Carolina was 4,360,000 head compared to 4,805,000 head last Friday and Saturday.
Eggs: The market was steady on all sizes. Supplies were moderate, overall. Retail demand was fairly light to moderate. Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets, cents per dozen: Extra Large 115.35, Large 107.07, Medium 68.00, and Small 46.00.
Cotton: The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 61.52 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 57.95 cents per pound.
Grain: U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was 2 cents lower when compared to last report. Prices ranged $3.95-$4.80 at feed mills and $3.91-$4.40 at elevators; new crop $3.80. U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were mostly 10 cents lower. Prices were $9.08 at the processors and ranged $8.33-$8.53 at the elevators; new crop $8.17-$8.58. U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat had no price comparison; prices were $4.31-$4.39 at the elevators. Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $326.10 per ton for 48% protein.
