DAILY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS FOR SOUTHERN FARM NETWORK

The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for August 30, 2019 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. All livestock is state reported.

Cattle: At the livestock auction held Thursday in Smithfield a total of 431 cattle were sold. Compared to last week, breaking type slaughter cows were 1.00 to 2.00 lower, while boning type were 3.00 to 5.00 higher; there were too few comparable bulls the previous week to establish a market comparison. Feeder steers were mostly steady to 1.00 lower on a fairly light test; bulls were unevenly steady; while heifers were mostly 3.00 to 4.00 higher. Demand was good; market activity and buyer interest were moderate. Offerings of cattle were mostly moderate. Cattle quality was average. Average dressing slaughter cows brought $50-$64.50, with high dressing up to $67. Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, ranged $89-$89.50, high dressing ranged $95-$96. 400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers ranged $124-$137, 500-600 lbs. were $125. M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. ranged $110-$124, 500-600 lbs. were $106-$115. M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. were $119-$123, 500-600 lbs. ranged $110-$121.

Broiler-Fryers: The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand. Average weights were mostly desirable. The estimated slaughter for Friday and Saturday in North Carolina was 4,998,000 head compared to 3,669,000 head last Friday and Saturday.

Eggs: The market was steady on all sizes. Supplies were mostly moderate, overall. Retail demand was fairly good. Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets, cents per dozen: Extra Large 139.10, Large 130.13, Medium 84.00, and Small 46.00.

Cotton: The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 58.05 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 54.84 cents per pound.

Grain: U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was 2 cents lower when compared to last report. Prices ranged $3.94-$4.89 at feed mills and $3.90-$4.39 at elevators; new crop $3.79-$4.74. U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were 1 cent higher. Prices were $8.94 at the processors and ranged $8.17-$8.31 at the elevators; new crop $7.92-$8.44. U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat was 2 cents lower; prices were $4.34-$4.49 at the feed mills and $4.06-$4.29 at the elevators. Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $324.00 per ton for 48% protein.
