NC State Extension Economist Mike Walden – “Is the Labor Market Improving?”


Mary:  This is Mary Walden with economist MW, welcoming you to the economic perspective.   Today’s program asks if the labor market is improving.  Mike, there are two reasons to watch the job market.  One is that we need more jobs to help workers who were hurt during the recession.  But the other reason is to give us a clue about what the Federal Reserve might do about interest rates.  So what are we seeing for jobs?

Mike:  Summary Answer

  1. Most of indicators are pointing better
  2. Jobs are increasing
  3. All the unemployment rates are dropping
  4. Length of time people are out of work is falling
  5. People working part time for economic reasons is falling
  6. Rate of workers voluntarily quitting work is rising
  7. And, wages are starting to rise at a faster rate
