NC State Ag Economist Mike Walden – “Paying for Schools”
Mary: I’m Mary Walden with economist MW, welcoming you to the economic perspective. Today’s program looks at paying for schools. Mike, in funding K-12 public schools, there’s a three-pronged stool of the federal, state, and local governments. Do the shares from each of these governments vary among states?
Mike: Summary Answer
- They do, and North Carolina stands out on one of the prongs
- Average split is 10% federal, 45% state, and 45% local
- Federal share is slightly higher in NC at 14%, but big difference is split between state and local
- State share in NC is 60%, with local 26%
- So NC state share is much higher, and local share is much lower
- Indeed, only 7 other states have a higher state share
- Goes back to 1930 when state took over funding of local schools in the depression
- Does have an advantage of have more equality of funding
- I’m MW
