Mary:  This is Mary Walden with economist MW, welcoming you to the economic perspective.  Today’s program at energy usage.  Mike, spending on energy in the home is a major expenditure for most households.  How has this spending changed in recent decades?

Mike:  Summary Answer

  1. First, despite more households and bigger homes, total household energy usage has remained relatively constant over the past 30 years
  2. Means energy usage per household has dropped
  3. But big changes on what we spend on
  4. 30 years ago, 70% of household energy usage was on space heating and cooling; today it’s near 50%
  5. Big change has been on household appliances, electronics, and lighting: 17% of energy usage here 30 years ago; today 35%
