Farm Labor Activists to Protest at RJR Annual Shareholders Meeting
Farm labor activists say they'll again descend on the annual meeting of cigarette giant Reynolds American Inc. to demand better working conditions for tobacco workers.
The Farm Labor Organizing Committee says it will protest outside Thursday's annual shareholder meeting in Winston-Salem because company executives have refused for years to meet on the issue. FLOC says the company should use its buying power to force farm owners to improve working conditions for thousands of tobacco workers in the state.
Reynolds has said the company's role is not to negotiate on behalf of non-Reynolds workers. The company pledged during last-year's shareholder meeting to use an independent, third-party monitor to assess the working conditions at U.S. tobacco farms that supply Reynolds.
