Excellence in Agriculture and Innovative Young Farmer Awards presented

The “Annual Breakfast with NC Ag Commissioner Steve Troxler” to benefit the Tobacco Farm Life Museum in Kenly was also held during the Southern Farm Show.

At the meeting, the Tobacco Farm Life Museum’s prestigious “Excellence in Agriculture” award was presented to Agriculture Research Specialist Joe Priest of the NC State Crop Science Department. For 47 years, Joe. who was integrally involved in carrying out tobacco research trials with NC State University and USDA, was honored as the tenth recipient of this award.

The “Innovative Young Farmer of the Year” was presented to a trio of young Nash Co. tobacco farmers, Billy and Peyton McDaniel and Philip Watson, owner/operators of Hickory Meadows Organics, a producer of over 400 acres of organic tobacco, as well several other cash crops. This award was sponsored by the three Farm Credit institutions serving the state.
