Equine Industry Big Economic Driver for SC Ag

South Carolina's Ag Commissioner Hugh Weathers says that in addition to March Madness and spring officially beginning in March, it's also the time of year that equine events really get going for the season in the Palmetto State.  Last weekend saw the Marsh Tacky Beach Races in Hilton Head, with the Aiken Spring Steeplechase on March 24th, the Pacers and Polo in Aiken and the Carolina Cup in Camden on March 31st.  There are also many smaller events through out the state.

In a survey some eight years ago, the value of the equine industry to the state of South Carolina was estimated at $3 billion per year.  It is also estimated that over 40 horse breeds call South Carolina home.
