Animal Research Minute – Where does diabetes start in the body?
Well, according to scientists at Washington University School of Medicine the first sign of diabetes -problems controlling blood sugar – starts in our intestines. This interesting discovery was made by studying mice and could revolutionize the way researchers understand diabetes. Researchers found that mice deficient of a certain enzyme developed chronic inflammation in their guts, a sign of insulin resistance. While more research is needed, this interesting finding in mice could lead to more effective treatments for people who have diabetes.
