Animal Research Minute – How could a virus help you lose weight?

Well according to the Deseret News, scientists are studying rats to see if a virus could help fight obesity.
Scientists gave one group of rats a virus that inhibits a specific protein that stimulates eating. Rats that
were given this virus lost weight. Not only did the virus suppress the rats’ appetites, it also seemed to
turn their fat into a good type of fat called brown fat which actually burns energy and helps the body to
lose weight. This study could lead to better obesity treatments for people.
