Animal Research Minute – Have you ever heard of the Epstein Barr virus?
Well, the virus is best known for causing mono, but is also linked to more serious conditions, including Hodgkin's, non-Hodgkin's and Burkitt's lymphomas. Yet little is known about exactly how EBV triggers these diseases. But a team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania recently discovered an Epstein Barr-like virus can infect and cause lymphomas in dogs. By studying dogs, scientists hope to uncover the mechanisms by which the virus can lead to cancer in people.
