Animal Research Minute – Could zebrafish help cure human eye conditions?
Well, researchers from University of Michigan Health System have discovered how zebrafish are able to regenerate damaged retinas after injury. This incredible finding means that scientists could be one step closer to slowing or reversing eye conditions like macular degeneration and glaucoma. When a zebrafish's retina is damaged, a certain growth factor sets in motion a series of changes that cause cells in the retina to regenerate and repair the damage. The next step is to explore whether the same can happen in mammals.
