Animal Research Minute – Could monkeys and pigs help cure diabetes?

Well, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, scientists were able to lower blood sugar levels in monkeys by transplanting the insulin-producing cells of pigs into monkeys. The monkeys did not reject the foreign cells, which gives researchers hope that this method of transplanting insulin-producing cells could bring them closer to finding a cure for diabetes. This research could one day help people with diabetes do away with insulin and reduce their risk of complications.
