On December 21, Congress passed a bill to keep government running and added some needed funding for farm aid.
Commissioner Weathers:
Yes, Mike. I’m thankful that our leaders in Washington were able to broker a bill before Christmas that offers some relief for farmers.
It includes close to $21 billion in disaster assistance for farmers. That assistance is much needed here and elsewhere.
Also included is $10 billion in economic relief for farmers.
We are still absorbing the details, of course. Passing this legislation is just the first step on a long road to getting this aid to where it can help most.
USDA will be administering this aid.
The agreement also extends the Farm Bill through the end of September, giving us time to work on that very important legislation.
I’m glad Congress bought some time, but it’s crucial that we keep the Farm Bill in our sights.
As always, we are in frequent contact with our federal delegation and will work to promote the interests of SC farmers.
