Soil health is the foundation for a long-term productive and profitable operation. Regenerative agriculture can be the next step in protecting and boosting soil health, sustainability practices, and overall ROI. James Maude, senior vice president of Acadian Plant Health, says Acadian biostimulants are formed to solve new challenges growers face in modern agriculture
“We know that the major challenges to both crop productivity and sustainability are no longer pests and diseases. That’s been the focus for many years. The major impacts have been well demonstrated now to be abiotic stresses such as drought and soil salinity, and also general soil health. Those are the areas that we are focused on with our state-of-the-art products, and we will lead the class in performance in the future with these new products.”
He says biostimulants augment different processes in plants.
“Some biostimulants like our seaweed extract interact with soil microbes. Those two things together give you a complete end result. We see a consistent plant response of increased biomass. So, when you apply a biostimulant, you get increased biomass in the top part of the plant, but also the roots. Underground, this is important, because that means you’re increasing the organic matter in the soil. We also interact with the plants’ resilience pathways. So, we know that our technology makes the plant resilient to abiotic stress, and abiotic stress is the weather effects like drought or freeze or even, in fact, the environment in the soil, so the salinity in the soil.”
Maude talks about what makes Acadian Plant Health biostimulants unique.
“Acadian had taken a different path. So Acadian decided they would invest heavily, 30 years ago, in fact, in research to demonstrate the mechanisms or the way in which the biostimulant works. What we’re doing is we’re investing to a new level, where we’re pioneering a transition to bring state-of-the-art formulation technology into our new products. So we’re going from extracts to formulated products. They’re designed for a solution for a particular problem. In our case, our pipelines focus specifically on solutions for crop protection against abiotic stress, crop productivity, and sustainability. So we’ve got three key areas that we’re designing specific products to fit into.”
