YOUR TRUSTED AGRICULTURE SOURCE IN THE CAROLINAS SINCE 1974

NC Commissioner Troxler: Holidays Offer Time to Celebrate Farmers

Even in hardship, we have so much to celebrate and be thankful for this holiday season. We live in a state whose farmers provide a significant part of our Thanksgiving meal.

  • As we approach Thanksgiving this week, I hope everyone will pause to give thanks to our farmers, whose work provides the foods we enjoy at our holiday meals.

  • North Carolina agriculture across our state has had a challenging year, but as we gather around our tables with family and friends and look at the bounty we have before us, it is a reminder of all that we have to be grateful for.

  • North Carolina leads the country in the production of foods that are part of many of the most popular dishes at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

  • Sweet potato casserole – we rank No. 1 in sweet potato production.

  • Turkey – we are the second largest producer in the country.
  • Pork – North Carolina comes in at No. 3.

  • Chicken – No. 4.
  • And, if you like apple or pecan pie, the state ranks in the Top 10 in the production of both apples and pecans.

  • The diversity of crops our farmers grow is impressive. You will find potatoes, greens, collards, tomatoes, corn, a variety of vegetables and even rice. Our farmers can produce just about anything, which means as consumers we have access to some of the freshest fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products available.

  • And that is a blessing on its own!

  • Our farmers can use your support right now, so I want to encourage you to buy local when making your meal and consider gifting local with North Carolina made specialty foods, drinks and other products.

  •  You can find North Carolina products in grocery stores, at farmers markets and at roadside stands. Look for the Got to Be NC logo on products.

  • Try something new or share a favorite with your family and friends.

  •  And, on behalf of the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, I want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.
