NC Commissioner Troxler: Annual Seedling Sale is Underway!

Orders are now being accepted for native and genetically improved tree varieties through the annual N.C. Forest Service’s Seedling Sale. Interested landowners are encouraged to shop early for the best availability.

  • About this time each year we talk about the N.C. Forest Service’s Annual Seedling Sale.
  • I like to mention it on this show to remind landowners who are looking to replant their land or homeowners looking for a smaller quantity of trees that they are now sale.
  • Because, believe it or not, even though the the Forest Service’s Nursery Program produces around 16 million seedlings annually — enough to plant roughly 30,000 acres of land, which is equal to nearly 23,000 football fields — we still sale out!
  • Early in the sale, landowners will find the best selection, including quality conifer and hardwood seedlings in a range of quantities.
  • We also offer genetically improved stock for Fraser fir, loblolly, longleaf, shortleaf, Eastern white pine and Virginia pine.
  • There are several benefits of purchasing these seedlings: They offer better:
  • volume growth,
    • tree form,
    • disease resistance,
    • straightness,
    • and other characteristics that are needed to produce beautiful Christmas trees, healthy woodlands and quality forest products.
  • The seedlings are produced at the Claridge Nursery in Goldsboro and the Linville River Nursery near Crossnore.
  • These are impressive nurseries and they are real assets for our state and landowners.
  • Customers who want to know more about specific tree species and available inventory can speak with NCFS Nursery staff, or check out the ordering website or seedling catalogs.
  • We have an easy-to-remember online seedling store at www.buynctrees.com. Tree seedlings can be ordered from the online seedling store at
  • Tree seedlings can also be ordered by phone at 1-888-NCTREES (1-888-628-7337) or 919-731-7988.
  • Tree seedlings can be ordered using the order form in our FY24-25 Nursery Seedling Catalog.
  • Just complete the form and follow the mailing instructions. You can find a link to all this information and the form on our homepage at www.ncagr.gov.
  • Seedlings will be distributed later this year closer to planting time, which is typically October through March for most containerized seedlings and January through March for most bare root seedlings.
  • If you are in the market for tree seedlings, be sure to check out the information.
