The Economic Perspective: “World Shifts”

Mary:  I’m Mary Walden, with economist MW, welcoming you to the economic perspective.   Today’s program looks at world shifts.  Mike, although each of us focus mainly on our families and our jobs, there are broader factors that do have impacts on us.  We’re experiencing one of those now – the coronavirus.  But another is world power – specifically what countries are the leaders in the world.  Can you summarize the shifts in world power that are occurring today?

Mike:  Summary Answer

  • In the modern world – beginning 400 years ago – world power seems to have shifted from east to west
  • China to Europe
  • Europe to the Americas – specifically the US
  • Now going back to China
  • And some say next shift will be to India – most populous
  • I’m MW

Mary:  And I’m Mary Walden for the Economic Perspective, an NC State Extension program from the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.
