The Economic Perspective: “Winners from the Trade War”

I’m Mary Walden with economist MW welcoming you to the economic perspective.  Today’s program looks at winners from the trade war.  Mike, the on-going trade dispute between the U.S. and China has disrupted international trade and created some trade winners and trade losers.  Give us a summary of who’s up and who’s down.

Mike: Summary Answer

  1. China is down – exports to the US have stopped increasing and have trended downward
  2. But the US is still importing products – indeed, imports as a percent of the US economy have increased
  3. Means there’s been a shift of US buying from foreign countries away from China to other countries
  4. Indeed, imports from Mexico, Vietnam, and even Japan have increased
  5. What this suggests is that the trade war with China is not resolved, US will still continue to import – the imports will just come from other countries
  6. I’m MW
