The Economic Perspective: “Update on the US Economy”

This is Mary Walden with economist MW, welcoming you to the economic perspective.  Today’s program gives an update on the US economy.  Mike, the first quarter of 2019 is now behind us.  The early part of the year was filled with much concern about the possibility of a recession.   Are things looking a little brighter now?

Mike:  Summary Answer

  1. They are – recession fears for 2019 have receded
  2. Jobs continue to be created, and consumers continue to spend
  3. Fed has stopped hiking interest rates, and stock market has rebounded
  4. Economy is performing just as many economists expected – improving but at a slower rate than in 2018
  5. Incidentally, see the same pattern in NC
  6. Biggest threats continue to be slowness in foreign economies, China trade dispute, and “hot spots” like N. Korea and Iran
  7. I’m MW

Mary:  And I’m Mary Walden for the Economic Perspective, an NC State Extension program from the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics
