Mary: This is Mary Walden with economist MW, welcoming you to the economic perspective. Today’s program looks at paying for infrastructure projects. Mike, it’s generally agreed the country needs an improvement in its infrastructure, including roads, transit, and bridges. But there’s always an issue of how to pay for the projects. What are the options?
Mike: Summary Answer
- Me – on NC FIRST
- Typical – user fee, like gas tax – is it adequate today with alternative fuels
- General revenues – argue everyone benefits directly or indirectly, so take funds from general sales and/or income taxes
- Have those who benefit – particularly property owners
- I’m MW
