Mary:  This is Mary Walden with economist MW, welcoming you to the economic perspective.  Today’s program looks at challenges for higher education.  Mike, higher education is critical for young people as well as the economy.  Training individuals for needed future skills are at the core of keeping our economy improving.  Does higher education face any special challenges today?

Mike:  Summary Answer

  • Yes – major challenges
  • Cost – keeping tuitions affordable
  • Shifting skills – advances in technology are changing the kinds of worker needed
  • How to teach – on-line versus in-person
  • Funding
  • Numbers – college-aged population growth is slowing – replaced by older workers who will need to be retrained
  • I’m MW
