Sustainable Farming

South Carolina’s Ag Commissioner, Hugh Weathers talks today about large and small farms in the Palmetto state, and what makes them sustainable.

There are over 25,000 farms in South Carolina cultivating almost five million acres and ranging in size from less than one acre to more than 2,000.

Over 11,000 of those farms are smaller than fifty acres, and only 364 exceed 2,000 acres.  On those five million acres, farmers grow everything from corn, soybeans and cotton to peanuts, potatoes, and collards.

A native of the Texas Panhandle, Rhonda was born and raised on a cotton farm where she saw cotton farming evolve from ditch irrigation to center pivot irrigation and harvest trailers to modules. After graduating from Texas Tech University, she got her start in radio with KGNC News Talk 710 in Amarillo, Texas.
