Today is the last day this month to participate in the South Carolina Pesticide Recovery Collection. Today’s location is the Southern States Cooperative in Johnston. The program will continue on June 11th in Jasper County at the Jasper County Farmers Market in Ridgeland, then concludes on June 12th in Orangeburg at Mixon Seed Company. All locations will accept insecticides, herbicides, nematicides, fungicides and other similar products used in commercial agricultural production. Times for each location are 9:00 am until 3:00 pm and drop-off is free.
Senate Deals with SNAP Amendments
The Senate has rejected an effort to increase the cut in food stamps in the 2013 farm bill from four-billion dollars to 31-billion. Kansas Senator Pat Roberts offered the amendment that would have ended the use of energy assistance as a basis for food stamp eligibility and eliminated categorical eligibility, a training program and grants to the states for good performance in managing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Bread for the World president David Beckmann says the level of cuts to the SNAP program are shameless, going on to say lawmakers shouldn’t allow hungry and poor people to bear the brunt of deficit-reduction efforts:
“There are very strong special interests that want to pass this farm bill. A lot of the money in the farm bill goes to people who own big farms and don’t need help from the government.”
Legislation approved by the House Ag Committee would cut about $2.5 billion a year, or a little more than 3 percent, from the food stamp program, and the Senate ag committee bill cuts less than one-fifth of that. The SNAP program is used by 1 in 7 Americans.
Weather Conditions Continue to Favor Head Scab Development in Wheat
NC State’s Small Grain Specialist, Dr. Randy Weisz has released information stating that head scab is starting to show up at high levels in many parts of North Carolina. Weather conditions, according to Weisz, continue to favor scab development. Weisz has produced a three-minute video to help growers prevent high levels of vomitoxin in their grain. Building Pork Demand in International Markets
First quarter U.S. pork export sales were down from those of one year ago. Market access issues are at the heart of that situation. Pork Checkoff Assistant Vice President of International Marketing Becca Hendricks says efforts are continually underway to build export demand…
“We are always looking at opportunities around the world. If one market closes we can divert product to another country. A lot of initiatives to make sure our product is still moving overseas as it should.”
Hendricks says opportunities are still being found around the world:
“We are seeing a lot of growth in Central and South America. Middle incomes are raising in those countries and pork is the preferred protein. As we get more market access, we have a really good relationship there and we are hoping to get more pork in their diets.”
