SC Commissioner Hugh Weathers: Watermelon Field Day

South Carolina is known for its watermelon production and this is the time of year for delicious SC watermelons. Commissioner Hugh Weathers is here to talk to us more about Watermelon Field Day happening this week.

  • Happening at Clemson University’s Edisto Research and Education Center (REC)
  • Thursday, July 12th registration at 8 AM
  • Topics on the agenda include: herbicides, miticides, pollinators
  • Indoor and outdoor event where it begins inside where experts will discuss various topics—herbicides, miticides, pollinators to name a few—related specifically to SC watermelon production and then move outside to field research tours
  • Reports from South Carolina Watermelon Board and Association will give reports
  • Clemson will report on the following:
    • Organic watermelon production
    • Supporting and attracting pollinators to watermelon fields
    • Watermelon disease identification
  • Participants will visit plots of 86 varieties of melon trials
  • Gilbert Miller will be reporting on the 2017 Southeast variety trial results
  • Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) and Pesticide License credits will be offered
  • Lunch will be provided for all participants and during lunch, Dr. Tom Dobbins will give a Clemson Extension update to all attending
  • Watermelon Queen Emily Dicks will give a presentation on “Watermelon Fuels Athletes”
  • Representatives from SCDA that work with our commodities, specialty crop association, small farms, and retail will be on site to visit with participants
  • There will be plenty of opportunity to taste test multiple varieties as well
  • Watermelons are in season at the moment and are available at multiple roadside markets and our SC farmers markets throughout the state
