SC Commissioner Hugh Weathers: Christmas and Reflecting on the year

This week, many of us will be celebrating the holidays.

  • The slower pace of this time of year always gives Blanche and me time to reminisce about Christmases past. This year especially as we think of holidays and celebrations with family and friends that may not be happening.
  • But there is still plenty to celebrate. For many, this season brings a feeling of joy, peace and hope that I know I find comfort in as well.
  • I even have a new grandson, Ransom, that will be experiencing his first Christmas this year.
  • SCDA has plenty to celebrate this year:
    • SCDA’s Certified economic impact study showed that agribusiness now has a $46.2 billion economic impact in South Carolina every year
    • This brings 247,000 jobs, or one out of every nine jobs in the state.
    • Agribusiness Center for Research and Entrepreneurship (ACRE), hosted virtual workshops and pitch day resulting in grant money to agribusiness entrepreneurs
    • Agriculture Technology Campus investment in Hampton county
    • Farmers to Food Banks supplied 335,201 pounds of local fresh fruit and vegetables to those in need, supporting 33 farms and 9 food hubs and distributors
  • Whether you’re in-person or on zoom, I wish you and yours a holiday season filled with great memories and new traditions your family will enjoy for a lifetime. Merry Christmas!
