SC Commissioner Hugh Weathers: ACRE Pitch Day

The ACRE 2020 Curriculum Pitch was Tuesday, December 8th. Here to tell us more is SC Ag Commissioner Hugh Weathers.

  • Over the course of this fall, the Agribusiness Center for Research and Entrepreneurship held its curriculum program, with five two-hour courses spread out over six weeks.
  • Attendees received training in marketing, financial planning, value-added processes, legal requirements, state and federal grant opportunities, and more.
  • Their experience culminates in Pitch Day, which was held virtually this year. Participants pitch their business plan for a chance to be selected to receive a grant for their business.
  • This year, participants competed to receive possible $5,000 and $2,500 grant awards.
  • Among the participants in the curriculum program were someone growing Bordeaux-style wine grapes, someone making vegetable-flavored ice cream, a business that will lease beehives to property owners, a hydroponic lettuce grower, and several other fascinating projects.
  • We look forward to seeing how this will help these agribusinesses grow.
  • Since 2017, ACRE has:
    • Hosted agricultural workshops for 650 state residents (’18-’20)
    • Provided intensive agribusiness training to 63 entrepreneurs
    • Given grants totaling $490,000 to 35 entrepreneurs
    • Funded 14 major, industry-driven research projects
    • Served people in every South Carolina county
    • Received three USDA Rural Business Development Grants to extend our reach in rural South Carolina
