SC Commissioner Hugh Weathers: 2020 Hemp Farming Program

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture is now accepting permit applications for the 2020 hemp season. Here to tell us more about where to find the application and other hemp resources, is SC Ag Commissioner Hugh Weathers.

  • That’s right Mike. The release of hemp farmer, handler and processor applications on February 1st officially kicked off our 2020 hemp season
  • Now in our third year of the program, we expect this year to be the biggest with the largest number of farmers, handlers and processors
  • We have to adhere to some new federal regulations this year that could make things a little more complicated for farmers, such as:
    • Hiring new staff for sampling crop to test for THC
    • Tighter window for testing
  • But we’re also making some changes to help farmers
    • New KRS system will be up and running mid March to track applications, tests
  • The application period for farming permits will end March 31st.
  • Applications can be found on our website at agriculture.sc.gov/hemp and submitted in person or via mail to the Consumer Protection building located at the State Farmers Market in West Columbia.
  • A free Hemp Resource Event is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 28, 2020, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Phillips Market Center, 117 Ballard Ct. in West Columbia. Join us for vendor booths, discussions, and other resources

  • While there have been changes for this season, SCDA is adapting and we’re committed to helping nurture this new crop and the farmers growing it.
