Dr. Matt Smith, as Director of the Pee Dee Research & Education Center near Florence will host his first ever field day at the Pee Dee coming up on September 9th
“I hope it will be a very interesting day. We are planning the morning to have 3 different tours with time for attendees to choose 2. The first will be cotton, and the cotton breeding research and genetics to get drought resistance, weeds and insects and variety testing.”
The other two tours will cover a variety of crops explains Smith:
“We have added a peanut and soybean breeder to the faculty here. The second tour will emphasize those crops and meet those breeders and hear about their efforts. We are trying to adapt varieties to our conditions and maybe even add traits like high oleic acid that buyers are looking for.”
In addition, there will also be a grain sorghum plot tour says Smith:
“We do have a sorghum genetics program here in Pee Dee. It is amazing to see the variety of plants that are called sorghum that are a wide range in size and type.”
The Pee Dee Field Day is September 9th, with registration getting underway at 8:00 am, tours start at 8:30, and will be followed by a lunch. No registration is required.
