On Thursday, June 26th, Clemson Extension will be hosting a cotton and soybean insect scouting field day at the Pee Dee Research & Education Center near Florence.  Hannah Mikell, Extension agronomy agent in Clarendon County:

“It’s a way to make sure we are on the same page with the growers to make sure they know what to look for and making sure they get the most information they can for their crops.”

While the field day will be focusing on cotton and soybeans, Mikell says other crop specialist will be on hand:

“We will also be able to answer questions on corn and other crops.”

Mikell explains that the day will get underway with a look back:

“We will start with a representative from the regulatory group with a look back at how things were 100 years ago; how they used to spray for insects and how its brought us to where we are today.”

The field day will progress to a plot tour for insect identification:

“We will have insect identification for the different crops from one of our specialists. Mid morning we will go out to the plots and see what insect pressure it out right now. Then we will go back to the auditorium and hear an overview from our sponsors.”

Mikell explains that CCA credits as well as pesticide credits will be available from this field day:

“It is free to the public. Our sponsors come in and help us to host this meeting We do offer three pesticide credits as well as other credit.”

Deadline to RSPV for meal planning purposes is June 24th, and can be done by calling Hannah Mikell at 803-553-7244.
