DAILY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS FOR SOUTHERN FARM NETWORK

 

The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for February 25, 2019 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  All livestock is state reported.

 

Cattle:  At the livestock auction held Friday in Siler City a total of 212 cattle, 68 goats, and

42 sheep were sold.  Compared to last week, slaughter cows were mostly 4.00 to 5.00 higher, while slaughter bulls were unevenly steady.  Feeder cattle were sharply lower.  Demand, market activity, and buyer interest were moderate.  Offerings of cattle were light due to inclement weather.  Cattle quality was average.  400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers ranged $130-$149.  M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. ranged $120-$125, 500-600 lbs. were $117-$120.  M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. were $120-$139, 500-600 lbs. ranged $127-$135.

 

Goats:  At the goat auction in Shelby on Friday, February 22, 172 goats and 12 sheep were sold.  Slaughter and Replacement Classes: Kids: Selection 2 under 20 lbs. $35-$55, 20-40 lbs. $50-$70, 40-60 lbs. $65-$85; Selection 3 20-40 lbs. $37.50-$45.  Yearlings: Selection 1 60-80 lbs. $140-$155, 80-100 lbs. $160-$195; Selection 2 60-80 lbs. $90-$132.50, 80-100 lbs. $115-$145.  Does/Nannies: Selection 1 100-140 lbs. $170-$245; Selection 2 50-70 lbs. $85-$110, 70-100 lbs. $90-$117.50, 100-140 lbs. $110-$130; Selection 3 50-70 lbs. $35-$60.  Bucks/Billies: Selection 2 70-100 lbs. $70-$105, 100-150 lbs. $105-$135, 150-250 lbs. $125-$155.

 

Broiler-Fryers:  The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand.  Average weights were desirable to heavy.  The estimated slaughter for Monday in North Carolina was 3,364,000 head compared to 3,099,000 head last Monday.

 

Eggs:  The market was lower on extra large and large, steady on the balance.  Supplies were mostly moderate.  Retail demand was moderate to light.  Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets, cents per dozen: Extra Large 125.04, Large 122.28, Medium 91.00, and Small 80.00.

 

Cotton:  The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 69.85 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 67.42 cents per pound.

 

Grain:  U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was mostly 5 cents lower when compared to last report.  Prices ranged $4.10-$4.68 at feed mills and $3.85-$4.30 at elevators; new crop $3.93-$4.53. 

U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were mostly 1 cent higher.  Prices were $8.71-$9.01 at the processors and ranged $8.37-$8.92 at the elevators; new crop $8.52-$9.41.  U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat was mostly 5 cents lower; prices were $4.00-$4.30 at the feed mills and $4.00 at the elevators; new crop $4.13-$4.68.  Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $344.40 per ton for 48% protein.
