The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for January 03, 2019 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  All livestock is state reported.

 

Cattle:  There were no livestock auctions held Wednesday in North Wilkesboro and Norwood. 

 

Goats:  At the bimonthly goat sale in Smithfield on Wednesday 52 goats and 22 sheep were sold.  Prices are per head, weights estimated.  Slaughter and Replacement Classes:  Kids: Selection 1 20-40 lbs. 102.50-125.00, 40-60 lbs. 125.00-180.00, 60-80 lbs. 177.50-240.00; Selection 3 40-60 lbs. 96.00.  Yearlings:  Selection 1 60-80 lbs. 240.00, 80-100 lbs. 270.00.  Does/Nannies: Selection 1 70-100 lbs. 147.50-160.00, 100-140 lbs. 190.00.  Wethers:  Selection 70-100 lbs. 200.00-232.50, 125-150 lbs. 300.00-360.00.  Bucks/Billies: Selection 1 100-150 lbs. 230.00-255.00, 150-250 lbs. 370.00-510.00.  Sheep-Lamb: Slaughter lambs: Choice and Prime: 20-60 lbs. 125.00-135.00, 60-100 lbs. 165.00-217.50. Ewes-Good: 100-200 lbs. 172.50-190.00; Utility 80-100 lbs. 97.50.

 

     At the state grade goat sale at Monroe on Wednesday 158 goats and 101 sheep were sold.  All prices are quoted per head.  Slaughter and Replacement Classes:  Goats Kids:  Selection 1 40-60 lbs. 110.00-140.00, 60-80 lbs. 164.00-187.50; Selection 2 20-40 lbs. 45.00-80.00.  Does/Nannies: Selection 2 70-100 lbs. 120.00-170.00, 100-140 lbs. 152.50; Selection 2 50-70 lbs. 95.00, 100-140 lbs. 110.00-117.50.  Bucks/Billies:  Selection 2 70-100 lbs. 75.00.  Sheep – Lambs: Good 20-60 lbs. 65.00-80.00, 60-100 lbs. 111.00. Choice & Prime 20-60 lbs. 87.50-113.00, 60-100 lbs. 119.00-150.00. Ewes-Good 100-200 lbs. 125.00-162.50; Utility 80-100 lbs. 77.50-92.50.

 

Broiler-Fryers:  The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady, and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand.  Average weights for the limited number of head slaughtered are desirable to heavy. The estimated slaughter for Thursday in North Carolina was 3,099,000 head compared to 3,024,000 head last Thursday.

 

Eggs:  The market was lower on all sizes.  Supplies were mostly heavy. Retail demand was moderate to light. Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets: Extra Large 147.22, Large 145.98, Medium 83.13, and Small 65.00.

 

Cotton:  The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 68.83 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 66.40 cents per pound.

 

Grain:  U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was 4 cents higher when compared to the previous report. Prices ranged $4.14-$4.79 at feed mills and $3.94-$4.20 at elevators; new crop $3.97-$4.56.  U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were 5 to 18 cents higher. Prices were $8.77-$9.02 at the processors and ranged $8.25-$8.65 at the elevators; new crop $9.34. U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat was 4 cents higher; prices were $3.89-$4.39 at the feed mills and $4.04-$4.19 at the elevators; new crop $4.17-$4.92. Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $351.70 per ton for 48% protein.
