DAILY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS FOR SOUTHERN FARM NETWORK

 

The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for October 02, 2018 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  All livestock is state reported.

 

Cattle:  At the livestock auctions held Monday in Siler City and Canton a total of 763 cattle,

63 goats, and 5 sheep were sold.  Canton had no available price comparison.  When compared to the previous Monday’s sale in Siler City, slaughter cattle were mostly $2.00 to $5.00 lower.  Feeder cattle were mostly steady to $5.00 lower.  Demand was moderate to good, and market activity and buyer interest were moderate to active.  Offerings of cattle were moderate.  Cattle quality was average to attractive.  Average dressing slaughter cows brought $47-$54, with high dressing up to $65.  Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, sold were $70-$84.  400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers were $140-$155, 500-600 lbs. ranged $131-$153.  M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. ranged $122-$140, 500-600 lbs. were $115-$135.  M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. were $130-$157, 500-600 lbs. ranged $124-$146.

 

Broiler-Fryers:  The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady, and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand.  Average weights were heavy.  The estimated slaughter for Tuesday in North Carolina was 3,233,000 head compared to 3,030,000 head last Tuesday.

 

Eggs:  The market was steady on Small, higher on the balance.  Supplies were mostly moderate.  Retail demand was moderate to good.  Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets, cents per dozen: Extra Large 143.47, Large 128.74, Medium 88.22, and Small 58.00.

 

Cotton:  The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 75.94 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 72.58 cents per pound.

 

Grain:  U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was 2 cents higher when compared to last report.  Prices ranged $3.92-$4.37 at feed mills and $3.78-$4.17 at elevators.  U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were 8 to 9 cents higher.  Prices were $8.81 at the processors and ranged $7.86-$8.41 at the elevators; new crop $7.86-$8.51.  U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat was 2 cents higher; prices were $3.77-$4.27 at the feed mills and $3.92-$4.07 at the elevators; new crop $4.13-$5.20.  Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $350.10 per ton for 48% protein.
