DAILY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS FOR SOUTHERN FARM NETWORK

 

The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for October 09, 2018 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  All livestock is state reported.

 

Cattle:  At the livestock auctions held Monday in Turnersburg, Siler City, and Canton a total of 1,869 cattle, 87 goats, and 25 sheep were sold.  When compared to the previous sales, slaughter cattle were mostly steady to $5.00 lower.  Feeder steers and heifers were mostly steady to $5.00 higher; bulls were mostly steady to $4.00 lower.  Demand, market activity, and buyer interest were moderate.  Offerings of cattle were moderate.  Cattle quality was plain to average.  Average dressing slaughter cows brought $37-$54, with high dressing up to $58.  Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, sold were $70-$83, with high dressing up to $83.  400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers were $131-$160, 500-600 lbs. ranged $133-$157.  M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. ranged $125-$145, 500-600 lbs. were $113-$137.50.  M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. were $128-$157, 500-600 lbs. ranged $120-$148.

 

Broiler-Fryers:  The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady, and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand.  Average weights were heavy.  The estimated slaughter for Tuesday in North Carolina was 3,244,000 head compared to 3,149,000 head last Tuesday.

 

Eggs:  The market was higher on Extra Large and Large, steady on the balance.  Supplies were moderate.  Retail demand was moderate to good.  Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets, cents per dozen: Extra Large 146.98, Large 132.25, Medium 89.00, and Small 58.00.

 

Cotton:  The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 76.76 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 73.40 cents per pound.

 

Grain:  U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was 2 cents lower when compared to last report.  Prices ranged $3.89-$4.34 at feed mills and $3.75-$4.05 at elevators.  U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were mostly 6 cents lower.  Prices were $8.53 at the processors and ranged $7.83-$8.43 at the elevators.  U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat was 2 cents lower; prices were $3.74-$4.24 at the feed mills and $3.89-$4.04 at the elevators; new crop $4.15-$5.17.  Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $352.80 per ton for 48% protein.
