DAILY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS FOR SFN

 

The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for September 28, 2018 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  All livestock is state reported.

 

Cattle:  At the livestock auctions held Thursday, September 27, in Smithfield, a total of 441 cattle and no goats were sold. There were no available price comparisons. Demand and buyer activity were moderate for the moderate offerings. Cattle quality was average. Average dressing slaughter cows brought $50.00-$59.25; with high dressing up to $66.50. Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, sold from $73.00-$82.50. 400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers were $134.00-$142.00, 500-600 lbs. were $131.00-$140.00. M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. ranged $122.00-$131.00, 500-600 lbs. were $118.00-$129.25. M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. were $129.00-$137.00, 500-600 lbs. were $120.00-$135.00.

 

State Graded Cattle Sale: At the state graded feeder cattle sale in Norwood on Thursday, September 27, a total of 348 steers and 315 heifers were sold.  M&L 1 steers, 400-500 lbs. $161.66 per cwt.; 500-600 lbs. $156.54; 600-700 lbs. $150.26.  M&L-1 heifers, 400-500 lbs. $135.78; 500-600 lbs. $132.85, 600-700 lbs. $134.42.

 

Broiler-Fryers:  The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady, and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand.  Average weights were heavy. The estimated slaughter for Friday and Saturday in North Carolina was 5,517,000 head compared to 5,169,000 head last Friday and Saturday.

 

Eggs:  The market was steady on Small, higher on the balance. Supplies were mostly moderate. Retail demand was moderate to good. Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs in cartons, delivered to nearby retail outlets: Extra Large 139.51, Large 125.08, Medium 85.04, and Small 58.00.

 

Cotton:  The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 76.12 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 72.76 cents per pound.

 

Grain:  U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was 8 cents lower when compared to last report. Prices ranged $3.81-$4.26 at feed mills and $3.66-$4.11 at elevators.  U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were 9 to 10 cents lower. Prices were $8.60 at the processors and ranged $7.86-$8.31 at the elevators; new crop $7.65-$8.31.  U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat was 8 cents lower; prices were $3.66-$4.16 at the feed mills and $3.81-$3.96 at the elevators; new crop $4.15-$5.06.  Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $344.00 per ton for 48% protein.
