DAILY MARKET HIGHLIGHTS FOR SFN

 

The following is a summary of market prices and conditions of North Carolina farm products for July 27, 2018 reported by the Federal-State Markets News Service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  All livestock is state reported.

 

Cattle:  At the livestock auctions held Thursday, July 26 in Smithfield, a total of 502 cattle were sold. Compared to the previous sale, slaughter cows were mostly $1.00-$4.00 lower; bulls were $2.00 to $7.50 higher. Feeder steers were $1.00 to $3.00 higher, while heifers were mostly $.25-$4.00 lower. Feeder bulls were $2.00-$7.00 higher. Demand, buyer activity and offerings were moderate Cattle quality was average. Average dressing slaughter cows brought $52.00-$64.00, with high dressing up to $73.00. Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, sold from $80.00-$84.00 and high dressing ranged $90.00 to $94.00. 400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers were $138.00-$151.00, 500-600 lbs. ranged $132.00-$142.00. M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. ranged $120.00-$136.00, 500-600 lbs. were $118.00-$133.00. M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. were $131.00-$144.00, 500-600 lbs. were $126.00-$138.00.

 

Broiler-Fryers:  The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand.  Average weights were heavy. The estimated slaughter for Friday and Saturday in North Carolina was 3,856,000 head compared to 3,582,000 head last Friday and Saturday.

 

Eggs:  The market was steady on all sizes. Supplies were moderate. Retail demand was mostly moderate. Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets: Extra Large 149.94, Large 137.54, Medium 71.35, and Small 59.00.

 

Cotton:  The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 88.56 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 85.33 cents per pound.

 

Grain:  U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was 1 cent higher when compared to last report. Prices ranged $4.02-$4.46 at feed mills and $3.67-$4.42 at elevators; new crop $3.86-$4.41.  U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were 9 to 14 cents higher. Prices were $9.20 at the processors and ranged $8.20-$8.43 at the elevators; new crop $8.16-$8.70.  U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat was mixed; 5 cents lower to 1 cent higher; prices were $3.86-$4.36 at the feed mills and $3.91-$4.92 at the elevators.  Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $362.70 per ton for 48% protein.
