NCDA Fills Breach Left by Processor’s Sudden Closure

In October, Cool Hands Meats, an Animal Welfare Act-approved and USDA inspected slaughter and processing facility in Marion, NC unexpectantly closed, leaving a number of small farmers with birds in a difficult spot.

Recognizing that this could be a big problem for farmers, NCDA’s Meat and Poultry Inspection Division started looking looking at options that could help farmers through this pinch.

What they came up with is to allow North Carolina farmers with properly inspected equipment for on-farm slaughter and processing to process other farmers’ poultry through the end of the year.
