NCDA Daily Market Highlights for Wednesday May 30

Cattle:  At the livestock auction held Monday in Siler City and Turnersburg (Canton was closed in observance of the Memorial Day holiday), a total of 805 cattle, 32 goats, and 10 sheep were sold.  Compared to last week, slaughter cows were mostly 3.00 to 5.00 higher; while bulls were mixed, 8.00 lower to 5.00 higher.  Feeder steers were mostly 2.00 lower; heifers were mostly 1.00 lower; and bulls were mostly 1.00 to 3.00 lower.  Demand, market activity, and buyer interest were moderate.  Offerings of cattle were moderate.  Cattle quality was plain to average.  Average dressing slaughter cows brought $55-$69, with high dressing up to $80.  Average dressing slaughter bulls, 1000 lbs. & up, sold from $72-$95.  400-500 lbs. M&L 1-2 feeder steers were $136-$162.50, 500-600 lbs. ranged $139-$165.  M&L 1-2 feeder heifers, 400-500 lbs. ranged $125-$147, 500-600 lbs. were $125-$136.  M&L 1-2 feeder bulls, 400-500 lbs. were $131-$157.50, 500-600 lbs. ranged $125-$156.

 

Broiler-Fryers:  The North Carolina broiler-fryer market was steady and the live supply was adequate to meet the moderate demand.  Average weights were heavy.  The estimated slaughter for Tuesday in North Carolina was 3,090,000 head compared to 3,078,000 head last Tuesday.

 

Eggs:  The market was lower on extra large and large, steady on the balance.  Supplies were mostly moderate.  Retail demand was moderate.  Weighted average prices for small lot sales of grade A eggs delivered to nearby retail outlets: Extra Large 110.02, Large 106.92, Medium 92.00, and Small 77.00.

 

Cotton:  The strict-low middling one and one sixteenth Southeast average price is 93.71 cents per pound; the U.S. average is 88.29 cents per pound.

 

Grain:  U.S. 2 yellow shelled corn was mostly 6 cents lower when compared to last report.  Prices ranged $4.35-$4.75 at feed mills and $4.08-$4.65 at elevators; new crop $4.29-$4.84.  U.S. 1 yellow soybeans were mostly 11 cents lower.  Prices were $10.10-$10.40 at the processors and ranged $9.70-$9.98 at the elevators; new crop $9.63-$10.28.  U.S. 2 soft red winter wheat was mostly 6 cents lower; prices were $4.35-$4.65 at the feed mills; new crop $4.34-$5.37.  Soybean meal, f.o.b. at processing plants, was $410.20 per ton for 48% protein.

Fruit and Vegetable Prices (Shipping Point F.O.B.):  Eastern North Carolina – 2017 Crop Sweet Potatoes:  Demand moderate.  40 pound cartons Orange Types U.S. No. 1 $12-$15 some $15.50-$16 few higher, U.S. No. 1 Petite $10-$14, U.S. No. 2 $8-$10 some low as $6.50, No Grade Marks jumbo $8-$10 some $7-$7.50 few higher.  2018 Crop Blueberries:  Supply fairly light.  Demand fairly good.  Some production curtailed due to continued rain and wet fields.  Most present shipments from previous commitments.  Wide range in prices.  Quality variable.  Includes palletizing and cooling.  Flats 12 1-pint cups with lids medium-large $28-$36 mostly $30-$32 previous commitments lower.  Squash:  Supply light.  Demand fairly good.  1/2 and 5/9 bushel cartons Zucchini small $8-$12 mostly $10-$12, medium $6-$10 mostly $8-$10; Yellow Straightneck small $9-$10 mostly $10, medium $7-$8 mostly $8 FIRST REPORT.  Strawberries:  Supply fairly light.  Demand fairly good.  Some shippers are finished for the season as consistent wet weather has curtailed production.  Includes palletizing and cooling.  Flats 8 1-pound containers with lids med $13.50-$14.
