NCDA and Air Force Partner for Land Easements

Landowners have signed the first two conservation easement agreements under a joint partnership between the N.C. Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund and the United States Air Force.

Two farms, Hubers Farm and McAden Farm totalling more than 800 acres in Northeastern North Carolina, were recently awarded more than $1.5 million to help protect farmland and promote agricultural enterprises. Ag Commisioner Steve Troxler says it helps all parties involved.

The state secured $9.2 million in federal funding to support conservation efforts by the Eastern North Carolina Sentinel Landscape Partnership, which includes the department, the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and other federal, state, local and nonprofits organizations.

According to a study conducted by UNC, you pay less for groceries when this newcomer arrives in your neighborhood. Since arriving in North Carolina last year, Grocers near Lidl stores set their prices 9.3 percent lower on average than in markets where Lidl is not present.

The report, commissioned by Lidl, was conducted independently by UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, and researchers had full discretion of the study without Lidl’s input, according to Katrijn Gielens, an associate professor of marketing at UNC who led the study.

Still, the findings skewed favorably for Lidl over competitors, including Aldi, Food Lion, Walmart, Publix and Kroger, which owns Matthews-based Harris Teeter.
