NC State Economist Mike Walden – “Better Days Ahead?”

Mary:  This is Mary Walden with economist MW, welcoming you to the economic perspective.  Today’s program asks if better days are ahead.  Mike, the recent good number on gross domestic product – one of the broadest measures of the economy – has prompted some renewed optimism about the economy.  Is this optimism warranted?

Mike:  Summary Answer

  1. I think it is
  2. Job growth is beginning to mean better sales prospects for businesses
  3. Consumers say they will be increasing buying
  4. Looks like we’re on track to be creating at least 200,000 jobs monthly – not record-setting, but still healthy
  5. Increasingly, the issues are becoming ones of the distribution of economic gains
  6. If low-skilled and have been out-of-work for a while – not participating in these gains
