11-26-15 run time 2:35

Mary:  I’m Mary Walden, with economist MW, welcoming you to the economic perspective.   Today’s program looks at two potential game changers.  Mike, futurists like to speculate about inventions and trends that will dramatically change our world, like the auto, electricity, and flight did 100 years ago.  Are there any comparable inventions or innovations that will possibly have the same kinds of impacts 50 to 100 years in the future?

Mike:  Summary Answer

  1. Two that are mentioned – virtualization and 3D manufacturing
  2. Virtualization – allow you to be there without physically being there
  3. But get all the nuances of a physical location
  4. Implications for residential and business location, tourism – could dramatically change our economic geography
  5. 3D manufacturing – allows for customized production of products
  6. Don’t need a big factory – could do in-home
  7. Could mean dramatic downsizing of factories and factory work, and implications for world trade
  8. I’m MW

Mary:  And I’m Mary Walden for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service
