NC State Economist Dr. Mike Walden – “Major vs. School”

Mary:    I’m Mary Walden with economist MW welcoming you to the economic perspective.  Today’s program looks at major versus school.  Mike, among the many questions college bound students confront is whether their major or the quality of their college is more important in ultimately determining their salary.  What do the experts say?

Mike:  Summary Answer

  1. many of the experts come down on the side of quality of school for a couple of key reasons
  2. they argue more selective colleges provide a better environment for development of basis problem solving and creative skills
  3. many businesses would rather have workers with these skills, especially of business-specific skills will be taught on-the-job
  4. also, double-majors are more common at higher quality universities and colleges – and a double major gives the student more flexibility and a broader range of skills
  5. comparison of salaries supports the notion of the school being more important than the major
  6. I’m MW
