NC State Ag Economist Dr. Mike Walden – “Types of Health Care Systems”

Mary:  This is Mary Walden with economist MW, welcoming you to the economic perspective.   Today’s program looks at types of health care systems.  Mike, health care is a complicated industry, with many interactions between private providers, the government, and consumers.  Are there some standard ways in which the health care system is organized in different countries?

Mike:  Summary Answer

  1. There are primarily three alternative systems
  2. One is the totally government-run system – some call it the socialized system
  3. Here the government pays for all health care, employs the doctors and runs the hospitals, and makes rules about access
  4. Second is the single-payer system – government still pays for everything (out of taxes), but allows private institutions run the system – so providers and medical personnel are not government employees
  5. In the third system financing and operation of the health care system are private – although government may reimburse some of the expenses – and government relies on regulations and its subsidies to impact the system
  6. Now the US is like #3, UK is #1, and France is #2
