NC State Ag Economist Dr. Mike Walden – “North Carolina’s Exports and Imports”


Mary:  I’m Mary Walden with economist MW welcoming you to the economic perspective.  Today’s program looks at North Carolina’s exports and imports.  Mike, let’s bring the on-going national debate about international trade to our state level.   Put in perspective North Carolina’s exports and imports and how they compare to the national situation.

Mike: Summary Answer

  1. First on the export side
  2. 11,000 NC companies are engaged in exporting to foreign countries
  3. Exports are valued at $30 billion annually and support 150,000 jobs
  4. At same time, like the nation, NC is an importer: $47 billion annually
  5. Means have trade deficit of $17 billion, or 3.3% of state GDP
  6. Very close to 2.6% of GDP trade deficit for the nation
  7. One other item – $ accumulated by foreign companies eventually are re-invested in the US
  8. In NC, estimated these $ support 240,000 jobs
