NC State Ag Economist Dr. Mike Walden – “Looking for Learners”

Mary:  This is Mary Walden with economist MW, welcoming you to the economic perspective.   Today’s program examines businesses who are looking for learners.  Mike, it used to be that a person went to school, learned a skill or profession, got a job using that skill or profession, and then worked their life at that job.  But the workplace is different today, and I understand this means employers may be looking for different characteristics among their workers.  What are they?

Mike:  Summary Answer

  1. Obviously businesses still need people with skills to do the job
  2. But, businesses know jobs are changing rapidly – mainly due to technology
  3. Technology is destroying many jobs while creating others, and is happening fast
  4. So businesses are increasing putting emphasis on hiring individuals they think can learn new skills
  5. Raises an important question – if learning new skills creates costs for company, who pay
  6. And, will company restrict ability of worker to take those skills elsewhere
  7. I’m MW

Mary:  And I’m Mary Walden for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service
